McCarthy Completes Superb Spell In Renault UK Clio Cup
Jack McCarthy has brought a successful two year run in the British Touring Car Championship supporting Renault UK Clio Cup to a close, with a breakthrough victory earlier this year being one of the many highlights of his tenure in the championship.
McCarthy made his entry into the Clio Cup following a brilliant spell in karting, in which he was crowned a two-time class champion in the Super One British Championship, a two-time Dubai ‘O’ Plate winner and a European Rotax Junior champion.
Signing up with the most successful team in Clio Cup history, Team Pyro, the Bromley based racer made his mark immediately as he qualified on the front row on his championship debut at his home circuit of Brands Hatch.
That sensational raw pace continued throughout the season as McCarthy ended the year with the second best qualifying average on the grid, a remarkable feat in his maiden campaign against a number of more experienced rivals.
Consistent front-running results culminated in a richly deserved pair of outright podium finishes at Rockingham and Brands Hatch, which combined with five wins and eight other top three results in the Graduates Cup class capped off a stunning first season.
McCarthy remained with Team Pyro as he entered his second Clio season last year, and his superb speed was showcased from the off once again as he secured a breakthrough pole position and a podium finish in the first meeting of the year.
Backing that up with two more third place finishes next time out at Donington Park, McCarthy overcame a tough mid-season spell to star at Rockingham as he converted a second pole position of the year into a podium double, which included a first Clio Cup victory.
Those results guided McCarthy to a second consecutive top eight championship finish, while he great race-craft across the campaign was shown by the fact that only one other driver gained more places from their grid positions across the campaign.
